The Times says health service leaders are divided, with some saying that a surge of elderly patients was not materialising while others suggested that hospitals were starting to be overwhelmed. It also quotes England’s chief medical officer, Sir Chris Whitty, as saying the number of cases among young adults in London appeared to be “levelling off or falling” – but he stressed the effect of New Year’s Eve parties had yet to be seen.
