The Archbishop of York has written an article in the Daily Telegraph in which he criticises the “metropolitan elite” in London and the South East, claiming they misunderstand people who are proud to be English as “backwardly xenophobic”. The Most Rev Stephen Cottrell – who is the Church of England’s most senior cleric as the Archbishop of Canterbury is on sabbatical – also asks why being patriotic has become taboo.
