The Guardian reports that French President Emmanuel Macron has “implored” Russian President Vladimir Putin to let civilians flee Ukraine’s besieged cities. “Plea for safe passage after second ceasefire disaster” is the paper’s headline. The paper adds that it had been hoped that nearly half of the 430,000 residents in Mariupol would leave during the nine-hour ceasefire on Sunday, but only a few hundred are thought to have escaped.
